Domain transfer authorization code
A domain transfer authorization code is a code that helps a new registrar verify and process a request to move a domain registration from its current registrar. For many generic top-level domains it is called an Auth-Code, AuthInfo code, or EPP code. The exact name and process can differ by domain ending.
When is the code used?
When a registrant asks to transfer a domain to a new registrar, the new registrar may ask for the code issued by the current registrar. The code helps show that the requester can access the registration account or obtain the information needed for the transfer. It is one part of the authorization process; the registrant may also need to confirm the request through the registrars' messages or account screens.
For example, Priya wants to move priya-art.example from Registrar A to Registrar B. Registrar B asks for an authorization code. Priya obtains it through Registrar A's account or support process, then enters it in the transfer process at Registrar B. The code helps process the transfer, but it does not itself move the registration or change who holds the registration.
Where can I get the code?
The current registrar provides it. Some registrars let the registrant generate or view the code in an account panel; others require a request to customer support. ICANN's guidance for generic top-level domains (gTLDs) says registrars must make the code available through an online tool or provide it within five calendar days of a request. Check the current registrar's instructions because other TLDs may have different rules.
Treat the code like a password for a transfer. Give it only to the new registrar as part of a transfer you initiated. If you did not request a transfer and someone asks you for the code, contact your current registrar using its official account or support channel.
Is the code the same as a transfer lock?
No. The code is information used to authorize a transfer. A transfer lock is a setting or status that blocks a transfer until the registrar or registry restriction is removed. A valid code does not necessarily override a lock or other rule about whether the domain can be transferred.
