Automatic domain renewal
Automatic domain renewal is a registrar service that attempts to renew a domain registration before its expiration date, usually using the payment method saved in the account. It can help prevent an accidental expiration, but it does not guarantee that the renewal will succeed.
How does automatic renewal work?
The person or organization holding the registration enables or keeps an auto-renew setting in the registrar account. Before the domain expires, the registrar attempts the renewal and charges the saved payment method according to its own schedule and terms. The exact date of the attempt, number of retries, and billing rules vary by registrar.
For example, Taylor has taylor-studio.example set to renew automatically. The registrar tries to charge Taylor's saved card before the expiration date. If the card has expired or the payment is declined, the renewal may fail. Taylor should check the account and renewal confirmation rather than assume that the setting alone kept the registration active.
What should I check?
Check whether auto-renew is enabled for the specific domain, which payment method will be charged, the renewal price, and when the registrar will attempt the payment. Keep billing details current and read renewal notices. If you no longer want the domain, turn off automatic renewal through the registrar before its cutoff date; disabling it generally means the registration will not be renewed when it expires.
Automatic renewal is different from an auto-renew grace period. The first is a setting in the customer account that authorizes a registrar to attempt renewal. Some registry systems also use “auto-renew” terminology for technical processing after a domain expires. That technical period does not mean the customer has successfully paid or that the registrar guarantees the domain will remain available.
Does auto-renew cover other services?
Usually it applies to the domain registration only. A website hosting plan, mailbox, or other subscription may have separate billing and renewal settings. If a domain is not successfully renewed, the website and email that depend on its name may become difficult to reach, even if those services are still paid for.
