Domain renewal
Domain renewal is the process of extending a domain registration so the person or organization holding the registration can continue using the name after its current registration period ends. A domain is registered for a set period, so the registrant must follow the registrar's renewal process and terms to keep it.
When does a domain need to be renewed?
The registration has an expiration date. The length of a registration and available renewal periods depend on the domain ending and registrar. For many generic top-level domain (gTLD) registrations, such as names ending in .com, terms are commonly between one and ten years, but check the actual registration record and agreement for your domain.
For example, Jordan registers jordan-studio.example for a year and uses it for a portfolio website and email. Before the registration expires, Jordan renews it through the registrar. The registration continues, so the name can keep directing visitors and mail to the services configured for it. Renewal keeps the domain registration active; it does not renew a separate hosting or email subscription.
What happens if the registration expires?
If a registrant does not renew, the domain may stop working for the website or email that use it. What happens next depends on the registrar's terms and the domain's rules. There may be a period in which the previous registrant can renew or restore the name, sometimes for an additional fee. After the recovery stages provided for that domain, the name may be deleted and become available for someone else to register. Do not assume that every ending has the same timeline or recovery options.
ICANN's renewal guidance for gTLDs advises registrants to know their registrar's terms, keep contact information current, and track the expiration date. Some registrars offer automatic renewal; if you use it, keep the payment method valid and confirm that renewal succeeded. A reminder or payment attempt is not the same as confirmation that the registration was renewed.
Does renewing a domain renew the website and email?
No. Renewal applies to the domain registration. Website hosting and email may be separate subscriptions with their own renewal dates and billing. If the domain expires, those services might still exist, but people may no longer be able to reach them through the domain until registration and the relevant settings work again.
Check the domain's expiry date in the registrar account, then check hosting and email billing separately. If someone else manages the domain for you, make sure you know which account controls renewal and how you will receive notices.
